The Townsend Cats received a gift from our fur parents this weekend, and we enjoy it so much that we want to tell all our feline and human friends about it!
We were presented this gift because of my uncle Chase. All of us cats drink distilled water from various bowls. Chase is the exception. My handsome uncle will only drink water running from the tap. During our routine June visit with our veterinarian, it was discovered that Chase had miniscule crystals in his urine. Our doctor recommended a specific dry food be added to Chase’s diet. His staff also agreed that Chase would be better off drinking distilled water like the rest of us.
To make sure that Chase drinks only distilled water, and to accommodate his preference for lapping from a stream, our fur parents did a bit of online research and selected a wonderful solution! We can all now enjoy this gift in addition to our water dishes! After less than 24 hours, it is 60% Townsend Cat approved. Six of us absolutely love it, three are still investigating and learning how to use it, and one has decided he prefers drinking from a bowl.
Chase helped Dad unpack the box and set it up, and he was the first to use it. Though Chase misses drinking from the tap, he agrees that this is an awesome alternative, and he recognizes the benefit of being able to enjoy flowing water whenever he wishes, instead of having to wait for a human to turn on the faucet.

Drinkwell Stoneware Pagoda Pet Fountain by PetSafe
Cost: $79.95
Townsend Cat Rating: Ten Paws Up !!!
The ceramic Pagoda Pet Fountain offers three drinking areas – an upper tower dish and a lower basin along with streams of water that fall from each side of the tower. Seventy ounces of water (we are using distilled, of course) circulate through a low-voltage pump located under the tower. A foam filter catches hair and similar debris that might fall into the water, while a charcoal filter ensures the water stays fresh. The three drinking options and the size of the fountain allow two or three cats to drink from it at the same time. Chase and I have shared it several times, while Cheyenne, Merlin, Selene, and Cody prefer to enjoy it alone.
The Pagoda Pet Fountain is available in four colors, which appeals to humans, and the gentle sound of falling water adds a peaceful, relaxing quality to the room for felines and fur parents.
Mom purchased our fountain online, along with extra filters and a cleaning kit. According to the instructions, the fountain and pump should be cleaned once each week. The filters should be changed every two to four weeks, depending in part on the number of cats using the fountain. The ceramic basin and tower are dishwasher safe, while the pump must be cleaned manually following the step-by-step instructions provided by the manufacturer.
We chose a red fountain, which is Mom’s favorite color and matches our décor. Dad ran the power cord through a homemade PVC channel before plugging it in so the cord would be inaccessible to us cats and out of our way when we visit the fountain.
We’ve had our fountain for a whole day, but transitions take time. Chase still visits the sink and calls for someone to turn on the faucet. But when Mom picks Chase up and sets him beside the fountain, he enjoys a nice long drink, and he is already visiting the fountain of his own accord.
